(Story
as told by Lewis Frank Hoobler) We
moved to a farm 20 miles west of Taylor in 1928. Leo’s uncle Clarence Hoobler
(1928) owned the place. On our first year of farming in late June
we had a severe hailstorm. It hailed everything to the ground.
Eunice was born November 13, 1929. The following year began the great depression
of the 30’s. There was drought so we
couldn’t raise much and couldn’t sell what little we did raise. We continued
to hang on under MANY difficulties. January 5, 1932 Melvin was born at Taylor in
Ralph Wells house.
The following spring we moved to what was known as the Capek ranch (1932). The
drought and depression continued and things were much harder for us. On August
6, 1933 Melvin died. Lewis was born
December 10, 1933 at Moulton, Nebraska at our home. And still the drought and
depression got worse.
In the fall of 1934, September I think, we sold what little we had. Dad (Leo)
got an old Model T truck and we went to Texas (1934) where dad expected to work
with a friend as a mechanic, but that didn’t work out. There just was not
enough work to provide for two families. So we loaded up and back to Nebraska.
We lived with Grandpa Frank and Grandma Lona Hoobler a few months, then cleaned
out and moved into the basement house belonging to Roy Austin (1935?), which was
about two miles straight west of the Moulton Cemetery. Eunice began her school
there. It was one and a half miles to walk over hills - a long walk for a little
girl alone. One winter, I believe 1936, it was so cold and bad they closed the
school. All of us went and stayed with John Hoobler, who then lived on the
Hoobler ranch. Then Dad could help them with chores, etc. and not have to make
the three-mile trip, and we didn’t have to maintain and heat a home. That’s
how it was in the 30’ s. We could drive our car only there in the community -
we couldn’t buy a number (license plate) for our car.
In the spring of 1937 Dad got a job as a mechanic from Ted Goos who had just
bought a garage in Sargent (1937). February 14, 1937 we moved into two rooms in
a house at the east end of Sargent. Art Mosley family lived in the other part of
the house. We were there 3 months when we found a 4-room apartment in a house 1
block west and ½ block north from the water tower. We lived there a few months
and then got a little 4-room house just north of the hotel. At that time it had
no bathroom, but water. To begin his job in Sargent, dad got $7.00 a week and
worked 7 days and 7 evenings a week. Soon he was on commission and made $15.00
to $20.00 a week, but still worked evenings
In
the fall of 1940 we moved to what we called the Troxel house. I began to work at
the Dependon Store. Just to help when they were short on employees. That became
a full time job in 1946. I worked at the Dependon for three summers
(1947,1948,1949), when I turned 16 worked for dad at garage (1950,1951). In
midsummer we moved again, as John Troxel wanted to move into his house. We then
moved out west on Main Street, which we called the Sears house as it belonged to
Sam Sears.
